Is medication right for you?

Pairing therapy with psychiatric medication can significantly enhance treatment outcomes for patients grappling with mental health issues. While psychiatric medications play a crucial role in managing symptoms, therapy provides patients with the tools to address underlying psychological factors contributing to their conditions. One of the primary benefits of this combination is the holistic approach it offers, targeting both the biological and psychological aspects of mental illness. By addressing these dimensions concurrently, patients are better equipped to achieve long-lasting relief and develop coping mechanisms for the future.

Moreover, therapy can complement medication by helping individuals understand their conditions more deeply. Through counseling sessions, patients gain insights into their thought patterns, behaviors, and emotional triggers, empowering them to manage their symptoms more effectively. This self-awareness fosters a sense of agency and control over their mental health journey, reducing reliance solely on medication. Additionally, therapy provides a supportive environment where patients can explore concerns, fears, and past traumas, fostering healing and resilience.

Furthermore, the combination of therapy and medication can lead to improved treatment adherence. Some patients may struggle with adhering to medication regimens due to concerns about side effects or a lack of understanding about their condition. Therapy sessions can address these concerns, providing education about medications, managing side effects, and discussing the importance of treatment compliance. This collaborative approach between therapists and psychiatrists creates a comprehensive support system for patients, enhancing their commitment to treatment and overall well-being.

Overall, pairing therapy with psychiatric medication offers a synergistic approach to mental health treatment, addressing both the biological and psychological aspects of conditions. By integrating medication management with therapeutic interventions, patients can experience enhanced symptom relief, better self-understanding, and improved treatment adherence. This holistic approach not only alleviates symptoms but also empowers individuals to cultivate resilience and lead fulfilling lives despite their mental health challenges.

Present Therapy Philosophy

At Delaware Present Therapy we prefer to take a holistic approach, and often try to find a route without the use of medication, before resorting to medications.

This may look like dietary changes and almost always looks like us asking for bloodwork done by your PCP before prescribing.

It is proven that many mental health symptoms are linked to biochemical imbalances, so we tend to air on the side of caution in case there are any vitamin deficiencies.

We also do not let our patients become test rats so we always order genetic testing.

In addition, it is important that you know counseling is done a minimum of monthly in order to receive medication. Medication may alleviate symptoms but does not address the underlying issue causing the symptoms. The only way to effectively learn to manage life stressors and symptoms of a condition long-term is with effective evidence-based counseling.
